Do you suffer from osteoporosis? Are you taking medications to treat the disease, often in the class of drugs call Bisphosphonates If you are taking these drugs, it is very important that you tell your dentist. Patients that take this class of drugs are at risk if dental surgery is done, teeth are removed, or any problems develop that may affect the jaw bone. The jaw bone can develop an infection that will not heal called osteonecrosis. This is a very serious infection that will destroy the bone in the jaw. While the percentage of patients that get this type of infection from taking bisphosphonates are small, the number of patients taking the drug are substantial. Therefore we are seeing patients with this problem in dental offices. What can you do to prevent this? If you are going to be starting these drugs, ensure that you dental health is excellent so that you will keep your teeth for your lifetime. By having a healthy mouth, the chances of needing to have a tooth removed are low. If you can prevent gum disease and prevent cavities, the side effects will not be a problem. See your dentist before starting these drugs and make sure your dental health is good to prevent unwanted problems.
