Several years ago I co-chaired a fundraiser for the Hearing Speech and Deaf Center. I know the co-chair from high school, and they came to me asking for my help (I used to chair fundraiser fairly regularly before I had my kids). I learned a lot about hearing loss and the services that a Hearing Center provides for a community.
Recently, I saw a statistic in the magazine First for Women that said you can damage your hearing after 30 minutes with 110 decibels (full volume) with music from a MP3 player, especially if the ear buds fit into your ear canal. Your hearing is compromised after 15 minutes at 115 decibels at a stadium football game, or from a baby’s cries (we all remember how loud that could be!). After 7.5 minutes you can suffer hearing loss from a rock concert or train horn. http://www.cincinnati.md/articlepage_cn.aspx?cn-documentid=642211&query=hearing loss from loud sounds&s=1&cat=con .
The solution is to monitor how loudly your children play their I-pods, and make sure they take a 10-15 minute break from listening every hour or so. Your families’ hearing is so precious, so protect it.
