9/22/10 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Wednesday

by Katie (Jenny Craig 2009 Poster Girl) 24. September 2010 15:10

I just have to rant and rave for a minute!  I now have cafeteria duty in the morning and most of the kids in our building have free or reduced lunch.  In other words, many kids get to eat breakfast and lunch either for free or reduced to their socioeconomic status.  Here's an example of how much in need children are of food because their families are in poverty: only 4 students out of our AM kindergarten class do NOT qualify for free/reduced lunch!  I have never heard the numbers so high!  Typically maybe 9 or 10 may qualify but every year it seems the numbers get higher and higher.  Here's what makes me sad: in a nation where's it become an epidemic of obesity in children our school, who is supposed to be EDUCATING future generations, does not carry out this promise when it comes to nutrition.  If I were to guess I would assume many other schools are not educating their children in proper nutrition as well.  Cafeteria duty has opened my eyes to some serious problems with breakfast:

  • students can choose between white milk or chocolate milk (most choose chocolate and then put it in their sugar cereal to only make it more sugary)
  • cereals are not as bad as fruit loops or cocoa puffs with zero nutritional value; however, Apple Cinnamon Cheerio's, Golden Grahams, and Frosted Cheerio's are not that healthy either
  • high sugar syrup that is used for dip for a large corndog with a high fat sausage in the middle
  • imitation fruit such as frozen strawberries in a high-fructose juice
  • high in sugar pop-tarts

I mean seriously?  This is what is fueling our kids brain as they jump start their day?!  No wonder so many adults struggle with their weight...it begins when we are children, we develop a taste for it which our brain craves, and it then develops into bad eating habits!

I am very much thankful to you for writing as you do in this entry. One may only hope that you continue as you are because it might be a great shame if you stop writing now.
